As a local Shanghainese and a frequent traveller of China Eastern (flown on their triple sevens for dozens of times in the last two years), I'd like to comment on a few issues you mentioned in the video. The first is the issues around the meals. It might be due to timing problems but usually the nuts is handed out first, around half an hour before the main course is served - which is the normality on flights from and to Heathrow. About the bread issue, the Chinese passengers, which is the main customer of the Chinese carrier tend to prefer to have bread as an option for post-meal snacks or supplement after rice dishes which is the main course, which is the reason why they heat the 200ish meals first, because quite obviously heating up a basket of bread is possibly easier than heating up 200 meals for economy class. Secondly, it is certain that their ife is horrible, however their onboard WiFi is indeed one of the best in the industry at a reasonable price, and there are wifi services on all of their widebodies although they are sometimes inconsistent. That is a good alternative option! Just as a supplement, the FQTV of CES is also quite interesting, the highest tier - Platinum can enjoy 20 complimentary upgrades on domestic routes and 4 on international routes, which is a coupon so basically a guarantee as long as there is availability - which is rare around the globe. Make sure to try out their newest A350s with Thompson Vintage XL+ Seats (the same one as Delta ONE) and COMAC C919s, which CES is the primary operator so far! They are truly enjoyable planes.

This is the most disgusting airline I've ever flown with. They have so many hidden charges. No in flight refreshments unless you have a credit card. They forbid you for bringing your own refreshments on. Customer service is difficult to reach. And if you want to check in luggage they will double the cost of your flight. Just pay the extra few hundred dollars and fly with an airline that still respects humans.

Asians basically don’t eat steamed rice and bread at the same time. They offered butter thinking for westerners to eat bread but never with steamed rice.

Agree with everything you said. Just flown from LHR to Fukuoka and at the very low price I got I would definitely fly with them again. Like you I was puzzled with the butter but like you flight the bread buns did arrive but long after the meal was finished both out and back, very strange. The only other criticism was the inflight entertainment, very poor and limited content, not even any outside camera views. Emirates does it best. Next time I will preload my iPad with stuff to watch, also be aware the headphones they supply are absolutely useless and could hardly hear any intelligible audio even at max volume. None were even issued on the return flight so bring your own.

You telling me white people don't eat buttered bread as dessert after their meal? 😱 Love China Eastern pre-COVID. They are usually the cheapest to Asia from the East Coast. I usually just starting the main and wait till their heated bread / croissant is ready and then eat that before resuming the main dish

eating a bread bun at the end of a meal maybe a preferred way for some people, I don't see any issues with that

Are we really surprised you receive this quality from an airline from China lol? I live in Hong Kong for 27 years and managed to avoid to fly this airline for long haul every single time

I just flew Madrid - Shanghai 3 weeks in Premium Economy on the A350, price was about 850 round trip vs Economy 650, service, food and all Is the same as Economy, you only get the better seat... For the price, it was a great deal, but Is something to have in mind.

Download off of NETFLIX? The last time I tried, it was on a flight to Texas. The NETFLIX app would not let me play the programs I downloaded. It needed to have a connection to the server before it would allow me to play them. On the way back, I connected to the server while still at the terminal and kept the application running during the whole flight back.

Most of that butter will end up in the fridge of Chinese aunties, I can gurantee it

I rode China Eastern’s 777-300ER to Taiwan last summer, and it was just as you said. Bland, unremarkable, and even uncomfortable. I was provided with a pillow and a light blanket, but that was it. My flight back on their A350 was very comfortable in economy. Far better than what they offered on the flight there. Seats were much more plush and there was more legroom. They also served better food than what they had for the first trip.

I had also flown this route exactly from FRA to PVG also in december 2023, but 2 days earlier than you on the 12th. And my experience was the same as yours with also the food that was the same + the missing breadrol story. The only difference is at breakfast I received a normal breadroll instead of a muffin.

You missed in your videos most important information:How wide are the seats!!! Most people choosing airlines check the seats width, because it’s much comfortable flying having 18 -18.5 inch seat then 16.9 inch seats , so please give this information and pitch in your videos, beside that yours videos are great 👍

A Chinese airline- absolutely NO-WAY. I don't trust flying over Russia nor the possibility of being stuck in China if my trip coincided with some international world drama.... particularly as China is not on the simplest terms with the West & With the world being so unpredictable right now. To me, it's not worth the risk...

3 months ago I flew on exactly the same B-2002 from PVG to AKL. For the whole route BUD-PVG-AKL I paid 460 eur. BTW, KE uses the same seats Safran Z300 in their newer Y cabins (particularly in B748s). Air China's newer 77Ws has 3-4-3 in Y. CA flows older 3-3-3 77W to FRA and newer 3-4-3 77W to FCO for example.

I flew China Eastern Airlines last month from Jakarta to Shanghai on a A330-200. It was a pretty good flight. We had a slight delay, but they managed to land in Shanghai on time. The crew was kind and helpful (they managed to find my lost left earbuds! 😂) Also, the food was FANTASTIC! One of the best in-flight meals I’ve ever tasted, after Thai Airways and Garuda Indonesia! The only drawback was the IFE. Yes, the system was pretty dated, and the movie selections were basic. Also, they DIDN’T provide us with headphones! I thought they forgot to provide headphones on our flight to Shanghai, but no, they also didn’t provide headphones on our return flight to Jakarta! 😓 Also, I saw a flight attendant walking back and forth with a camera attached on her chest. Although it didn’t really bother me, but yeah, it was quite odd. 🤔 Overall, it was a pretty good flight. Not the best flight I’ve ever had, but considering its cheap price, heck, I would fly with them again (but this time, PLEASE don’t forget the headphones)!

I am glad China Eastern spent lots of money on a aircraft Livery it looks cheap and very low frills being in a horrible plain white color scheme.

I tried China eastern multiple times and food and the service was always horrible. Worse from all Chinese airlines!

The bread being served after the meal seems to be standard across China Eastern, this happened on both legs when I was flying Sydney-Nanjing return last year. Enjoyed your video, keep up the good work!

I think I might have an explanation for the bread being served after the meal service. While bread is a staple in most western countries, it's more of a dessert or snack in east Asia, which is why a lot of bread you find in Asian countries like Korea and Japan are quite sweet compared to a french baguette, for example. So I think the intention of the meal service order was for the bread to be served as a dessert/snack.

The butter issues made me laugh xD

I flew them in first class between LAX and PEK in 2001. I can honestly say, the worst flight I ever took. The food was inedible, they ignored western passengers and gave decent service to Chinese passengers. The seats were not spacious, all reading material and in flight entertainment were in Chinese. It was long and boring. They offered a snack service, but only to Chinese passengers. Western passengers were ignored. I believe the aircraft was a MD80. It looks like they improved some, but for me, never again.
